Albumul Marii Uniri. The Album of the Great Union

1 Decembrie 1918 reprezinta un moment istoric crucial pentru identitatea poporului nostru: momentul Marii Uniri - idealul national in sfarsit implinit. Un fotograf si camera lui de fotografiat ne fac sa traim, la un secol distanta, ceva din „culoarea”, speranta si gravitatea acestor zile insemnate. Cine este Samoila Marza? Cine este cel care a ramas cunoscut drept fotograful Marii Uniri? Editura Monitorului Oficial si Arhivele Nationale ale Romaniei va invita sa-l descoperiti, intr-un album elegant, bilingv (romana-engleza), ce reproduce fotografiile unui alt album, aparut acum aproape 100 de ani, daruit de catre fotograful insusi marelui om politic Iuliu Maniu.

Cu un text introductiv semnat de istoricul Radu Marza, din familia lui Samoila Marza, albumul de fata contine 32 de fotografii, dintre care 5 infatiseaza momentul propriu-zis al Adunarii Nationale de la Alba Iulia, iar restul alte evenimente ori aspecte importante de la sfarsitul anului 1918 si inceputul anului 1919: ceremonia de depunere a juramantului si de sfintire a steagului tricolor al unitatilor militare romanesti din Viena, momentul plecarii spre Alba Iulia a unui grup de tarani din satul natal al fotografului, Galtiu, imbracati in straie de sarbatoare, sosirea la Alba Iulia a generalului francez Henri Berthelot, un grup de ofiteri ai Regimentului nr. 5 de Vanatori de Munte, alaturi de intelectuali, notabilitati din oras, tarani, portile I si a III-a ale cetatii din Alba Iulia, respectiv monumentul eroilor de la Custozza, aflat in piata centrala a cetatii. Celor mentionate mai sus li se adauga o fotografie de grup ce-i reprezinta pe membrii Consiliului Dirigent al Transilvaniei, Banatului si partilor romanesti din Ungaria si o frumoasa fotografie de tinerete a fotografului.

1 December 1918 represents a crucial historical moment for our people’s identity: the moment of the Great Union ‒ the national ideal finally fulfilled. One photographer and his camera make us experience, within a century distance, a little from the “colour”, hope and solemnity of those important days. Who is Samoila Marza? Who is the man known as the photographer of the Great Union? Monitorul Oficial Publishing House and the National Archives of Romania invite you to discover him, in an elegant bilingual (Romanian‒English) album that presents the photos of another album, published almost 100 years ago, offered as a gift by the photographer himself to the great politician Iuliu Maniu.

With an introductory text signed by the historian Radu Marza, a member of Samoila Marza's family, the present album gathers 32 photos, from which 5 depict the very moment of the National Assembly in Alba Iulia, and the rest of them other important events from the end of year 1918 and the beginning of 1919: the ceremony of oath taking and consecration of the tricolour flag of the Romanian military units in Vienna, the moment a group of peasants from the photographer’s home village ‒ the village of Galtiu ‒ are leaving to Alba Iulia, all dressed up, the moment the French general Henri Berthelot arrives in Alba Iulia, a group of officers from the 5th Mountain Regiment, together with intellectuals, town officials, peasants, Gates nos. 1 and 3 of the fortress of Alba Iulia, and the monument of the heroes fallen in Custozza, located in the fortress’s central square. Besides them, there are also a group photo representing the members of the Ruling Council of Transylvania, Banat and the Romanian territories in Hungary and a beautiful photo from the photographer’s youth.
